Coast Contra trading bars to songs like Mobb Deep's "Give Up The Goods," Nas' "Speechless," and JID's "Never" have helped the group's fame gradually develop over the past several months. They made their broadcast debut on The Tonight Show last month thanks to their growing popularity, and now they got what may be their biggest break yet when pop-R&B diva Ciara asked them to be on her new single "Jump". The group's loud, joyful energy of their back-and-forth rhymes, which are reminiscent of the cohesive flows of groups like The Furious Five, Jurassic 5, and more recently, Brockhampton, is one of their claims to fame. Their timing reminds me of Ciara's backup dancers doing the complicated choreography to songs like "Goodies," "Dose," or "Melanin" in lock-step precision. Although "Jump" doesn't do Coast Contra's occasionally jarring poetry justice, it does highlight their tight-knight camaraderie and introduce them to a brand-new audience, which may be enough to encourage some more listening and win over a whole new fan base.
